Affirmation Bible Reading: Genesis 1:27
‘God created human beings; he created them godlike, reflecting God’s nature.’
We were created to be God’s image-bearers and to reflect Him in all that we do. You only have to look at South Africa, referred to as the ‘rainbow nation’ to see the diversity of His image-bearers. God does not discriminate in His design and He has not created one image-bearer greater than the other. The good news is that Jesus came to seek and save everyone. His death on the cross was for the salvation of every tribe, tongue and nation. The commission He gave His disciples was to make disciples of all nations. He didn’t say “go and find people who look like you or sound like you.” He wants us to love and serve people from every nation. The family of God or the kingdom of God is colourful and His image-bearers are brothers and sisters in Christ.
It has been wonderful to see South Africans stand together as one against the forces of evil in our country. I believe God is teaching us that we need to stand together without division. We all bring different gifts and talents to be used in His kingdom. I Corinthians 12:21 says: ‘The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” Corinthians tells us that all the parts of the body (community) are important. Matthew 12:25 says: Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. South Africans are standing in unity and rebuilding. There is much to address: poverty, homelessness, unemployment, hunger and many more issues that need to be resolved. Let us all lend a hand in alleviating these problems.
Meditate on 1 Corinthians 15:58:
“Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.”
‘No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.’Mandela
Dear Lord, we know that you are always with us and that you fight for your people. We believe that it is not by power, nor by might, but by your Holy Spirit, that a difference can be made. When we feel broken and uncertain; hurting from struggles; fearful of the dark forces that constantly surround us and fighting to gain ground in our lives and families, remind us that you did not give us a spirit of fear. You gave us a spirit of power, love and self-control. Praise You Lord! Amen.
