Experiencing Holy Week is to walk through Jesus’ most trying hours, contemplating the events that led to Easter.
Begin reading the account of Jesus’ final week in John. Today read and pray through Jesus’ anointing at Bethany, when Mary pours perfume on Jesus (John 12:1-11)
Remind your children:
Read: • Isaiah 42:1-9 • Psalm 36:5-11 • Hebrews 9:11-15
- Mary’s unashamed, humble, extravagant gesture is a remarkable show of true devotion. Nothing here resembles grudging respect to a distant deity or an agreeable, but half-hearted engagement in typical religious protocols. This is whole-hearted adoration of a loving Lord. Can you sense God’s call to each of us to follow Mary’s lead, to become disciples of utter devotion to Jesus? Imagine the kind of love that would lead you to readily part with a year’s wages as a fitting response to the Lord of life.
- How does walking in the way of the cross, lead to light and life?
- What does God promise us about following Jesus?
- As we begin this Holy Week leading to Easter, how can you submit yourself to walk in the way of the cross, placing your hope and trust in Jesus?
Take time to read the Gospel readings this week and step fully into the story with Jesus and the disciples. Deeply feel the emotions of the week, so you can more vividly experience the joy of Easter on Sunday.
Respond in Prayer: Almighty Father, who sent your only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sin, show me how I can honour you and bring glory to your name, by walking in the way of Jesus. Give me grace and mercy as I try and fail, guidance when I’m not sure which way to go, and wisdom to trust you in all things. For your love brings light and life to all who seek it. May I seek you evermore as I walk with you through this Holy Week and beyond? Help us to live our lives fully here and now, with you Lord, at the centre of all that we do. Amen.
